Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this birth chart?+

Our calculator uses the same NASA JPL Development Ephemeris data that professional astronomers and research-grade astrology software rely on. Planet positions are accurate to within arc-seconds. The primary variable is your birth time — if your recorded time is off by more than a few minutes, house cusps and the Ascendant may shift. For the most reliable results, use the exact time from your birth certificate. Planet positions (signs and degrees) are highly accurate even with approximate times; only the houses and angles are time-sensitive.

What house system is used?+

We use the Placidus house system, which is the most widely used house system in Western astrology and the default in most professional software. Placidus divides the ecliptic based on the time it takes each degree to rise from the IC to the Ascendant. Other systems (Whole Sign, Equal House, Koch) have their advocates, but Placidus remains the standard for natal chart interpretation in the Western tradition. If you prefer a different house system, note that planet signs and degrees remain identical regardless of house system — only the house boundaries change.

Why do I need exact birth time?+

Your birth time determines two critical parts of your chart: the Ascendant (Rising sign) and the house placements. The Ascendant changes roughly every two hours, and the houses shift throughout the day. Without an exact time, we can still calculate accurate planet signs and most aspects, but house positions and the Rising sign will be unknown. The Moon moves fast enough that its sign can change within a single day, so birth time also improves Moon sign accuracy. Your birth certificate is the best source — hospital records typically record time to the nearest minute.

How to Read Your Birth Chart

A birth chart (natal chart) is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It maps where the Sun, Moon, and planets were positioned across the twelve zodiac signs and twelve houses. Reading your chart means understanding three core layers: planets, houses, and aspects.

Planets represent drives and energies. The Sun is your identity, the Moon your emotions, Mercury your communication style, Venus your love language, and Mars your drive and ambition. The outer planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — shape generational themes and deeper psychological patterns. Each planet's zodiac sign describes how that energy expresses itself.

Houses represent life areas. Your chart is divided into twelve houses, each governing a specific domain: the 1st house rules self-image, the 4th rules home and family, the 7th rules partnerships, and the 10th rules career and public reputation. The sign on each house cusp — and any planets inside — tell you where each life theme plays out most vividly.

Aspects are the geometric angles between planets. A conjunction (0°) blends two energies into one force. A trine (120°) creates natural harmony and talent. A square (90°) generates friction that fuels growth. A sextile (60°) offers opportunities through effort. An opposition (180°) creates dynamic tension between complementary drives. The aspects in your chart reveal the internal conversations between different parts of your personality.
